Periodic Constraint Satisfaction Problems: Polynomial-Time Algorithms

چکیده

We study a generalization of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), the periodic constraint satisfaction problem. An input instance of the periodic CSP is a finite set of “generating” constraints over a structured variable set that implicitly specifies a larger, possibly infinite set of constraints; the problem is to decide whether or not the larger set of constraints has a satisfying assignment. This model is natural for studying constraint networks consisting of constraints obeying a high degree of regularity or symmetry. Our main contribution is the identification of two broad polynomial-time tractable subclasses of the periodic CSP.

2 00 6 Generalized Constraint Satisfaction Problems

A number of recent authors have given exponential-time algorithms for optimization problems such as Max Cut and Max Independent Set, or for the more general class of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). In this paper, we introduce the class of Generalized Constraint Satisfaction Problems (GCSPs), where the score functions are polynomial-valued rather than real-valued functions. We show that...

Coping With Disjunctions in Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Path-consistency algorithms, which are polynomial for discrete problems, are exponential when applied to problems involving quantitative temporal information. The source of complexity stems from specifying relationships between pairs of time points as disjunction of intervals. We propose a polynomial algorithm, called ULT, that approximates path-consistency in Temporal Constraint Satisfaction P...

Backtracking and probing

We analyze two algorithms for solving constraint satisfaction problems. One of these algorithms, Probe Order Backtracking, has an average running time much faster than any previously analyzed algorithm for problems where solutions are common. Probe Order Backtracking uses a probing assignment (a prese-lected test assignment to unset variables) to help guide the search for a solution to a constr...

Processing Temporal Constraint Networks

This paper describes new algorithms for processing quantitative and qualitative Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problems (TCSP). In contrast to discrete Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP), enforcing path-consistency on quantitative TCSP is exponential, due to the fragmentation problem. Identifying the fragmentation problem allows us to design several e cient polynomial algorithms that are ...
